Tell me about your 2022 Edinburgh Festival Fringe show.

It’s a stand-up show called Don’t Make Me Hate You. I don’t want to hate people; they make me hate them.  In the show, I lambast politicians, reality stars, hipsters, cougars and the easily triggered, and turn my outrage into comedy.

Tell me about your previous Edinburgh experiences, or if it’s your first time, tell me about your expectations.

This will be my second Fringe; however, I have performed in Edinburgh outside of the Festival several times. During my first Fringe (2016), I performed my solo show called Daughter of a Garbageman. It was a deep, emotional and funny story about my family’s strengths, struggles and secrets. My venue was on a quiet street at 22:00 at the top of a boutique hotel. If people could find me, they were predominantly drunk revellers looking for dick jokes — not a woman’s personal journey.  They stared at me like I was abstract art. Thankfully, it rained a lot so people couldn’t tell where the rain began and my tears ended. I didn’t understand the Fringe and how it worked in terms of venues, content and time.

This time, I’m leaving the pathos at home and bringing the standup. I’m in the middle of the madness with an afternoon slot primed for a smart, post lunch crowd.

Who inspires you? 

George Carlin. of course. How could he not? His social commentary bit on the sanctity of life is as powerful and relevant today as it was in 1996 (sadly, it shouldn’t be). In terms of performers based in Scotland, that would be Jo Caulfield. Top notch. Brilliant, quick, and a good person.

Why have you chosen to perform as part of Alex Petty’s Free Festival?

Because comedian Martin Mor told me to. Martin is a great guy who has done the festival countless times. If he says Alex and the Laughing Horse are the way to go, then I’m in. Of course, let’s see how it goes before I fully thank him.

Is performing standup in the States as inhibiting as we hear it is due to political correctness?

I was confronted for using the word “fat.”  Does that tell you all you need to know?
