The Stand 2 is a tiny space that looks like someone’s front room. I think it probably is someone’s front room from September to July, but I digress. Some comedians fit a specific space, and after seeing Seymour Mace several times at the Fringe over the years, this space is his. The curtains are open, and the room is bright. My heart does a wee leap of joy as I notice the open window.
He begins with what he describes as a “pre-show announcement thing”. In previous years, the comedian has talked about his depression and anxiety. Recently though, he was diagnosed with ADHD, and the new meds, he says, seem to be working. “I’ve got so many new ideas!” We have a nice bit of stuff about a sign that shouldn’t be read before he leaves the stage – and re-enters to a Dick Van Dyke inspired song and dance number. The sweary title of this show is the chorus.
The ideas continue to flow thick and fast. He gently satirises fellow Geordies and the idea of regionalism, “the baby brother of patriotism”. We enjoy a game of Bible or Bollocks. He tells a brilliant joke about an alleged fake moustache. We meet a talking bum. And lots more.
Members of staff at The Stand having been choosing a different song every day for the comedian to dance to. Today’s tune is Let’s Hear it for the Boy by Deniece Williams – selected by Owen. We score the song for danceability. He then tries to ascertain a score from the people on the street below, by shouting out of the open window. It’s very funny, as the sound of the confused public comes wafting into the room.
And the finale of the show is genius.
If intelligent, hysterical, scattergun alternative comedy is your bag, Seymour Mace is for you.
