Dizney in Drag: Once Upon a Parody - On The Mic

Dizney in Drag: Once Upon a Parody ★★★★

This Review is from August 2024

Whoever said that woke is killing entertainment didn’t know what they were talking about. Woke is fun.

The Hairy Godmothers from Perth, West Australia – comprising lawyers, engineers, PhD graduates, and more – present two shows that blend self-love, sex positivity, and fairy-tale magic.

Dizney in Drag: Once Upon a Parody is an hilarious, fantasy-driven cabaret that reimagines classic tales into a modern musical of self-discovery. The protagonist, guided by the quirky and extremely tall, Hairy Godmother, embarks on an adventure through twisted fairy-tales, uncovering modern-day wisdom.

In VILLAINS: A Dizney in Drag Parody, the dark side is explored with humour and empowerment, tackling themes of greed, power, and sexual expression in a vaudeville of drag villains. The show rewrites nostalgic narratives to reveal the hidden depths of familiar stories, offering a tantalizing glimpse into a world of misunderstood outcasts.

One doesn’t see a show to review the audience, but these are the most happy and boisterous crowds I’ve seen this Fringe. Lots of lively working-class locals and middle-class fringe nerds, together, having a whale of a time.

I’m not sure that that this cast is parodying these classic tales as much as improving them. This is the ending that the Cinderella story should always have had.
