This Review is from August 2024
The show explores the many things that infuriate the Irish comedian, which at times, seems to be most things. He rants about the chaos of selling items online, on hearing babies cry on a pane, seeking treatment after getting a cotton bud stuck in his ear, and so on…
As an openly gay man for over 20 years, Gearóid is actually at his funniest when his ire has a point.
The bits about the pressures of being a gay uncle (a guncle) and a godfather are fun. An hilarious and memorable extended routine about giving blood was awesome. In Ireland – until 2022 – gay men couldn’t give blood if they’d had sex with another man within the last twelve months.
An accomplished, polished comedian. Any fan of stand up comedy should get something out of Gearóid Rage. If you’re looking for a show to take your non-comedy friend or relative to, by way of introduction to the genre, you could do a lot worse.
A competent, well-constructed hour. However, it is missing something.
Not every show needs a narrative arc or theme, but over an hour its nice to get to know the comedian a bit. Only during the excellent blood transfusion routine did he truly open up. He tells us how he actually feels at this genuine injustice, and why. The rest of it is good solid material, being pissed off at crying babies on a plane is understandable, and his take is funny, but ultimately, who cares?
