Lucy Hopkins: Dark Mother - On The Mic

Lucy Hopkins: Dark Mother ★★★★★

This Review is from August 2022

Welcome to the darkness. Will you make it?

Sitting on the top deck of a bus, packed full of people, the lights go out. And as if by magic, we are in another world.

Alright then. I’ll be mummy.

We are treated to an improvised, absurdist show crossed with a dark new age style comic ceremony. Hopkins asks open questions. Taking half answers from members of the audience, she improvises a bedtime story. There’s a hilarious, deliberately nonsensical bit about generational transformational healing.

The clown is quick. Sharp. A conductor. She frees her audience while retaining control. How Hopkins reads people so well in the darkness, I don’t know. Later, the audience provides rhythmic humming as Hopkins improvises a dark lullaby. It’s beautiful.

The dark is unpredictable and full of magic and laughter.

My favourite show at this year’s Fringe.
