This Review is from August 2024
This is the middle instalment of Marjolein Robertson’s trilogy of shows, which began last year with Marj. Fear not, you don’t need to have seen part one to enjoy part two.
Marjolein recalls her thirteen-year-old self, learning about periods for the first time at school. No boys were allowed in the class. These days most men still don’t talk about periods enough.
We learn the Shetland myth of the Sea Midder (mother) “…she’s like a fertility goddess… she enters Shetland from the sea, she brings us life. And through her rain, the plants are grown, and animals are born.” She ties this tale to her own life with wisdom and wit.
She goes on to blend ancient myths with her reality of a serious illness caused by her period. She makes Shetland’s beautiful folktales her own.
This is a strongly written, expertly, playfully delivered show from a comedian who knows how to tell stories. She’s captivating, so much so that one wonders if she needs the props and gimmicks that lightly litter the show. All she really needs, in my view, is a microphone.
Marjolein’s condition is called, adenomyosis, which can, in some extreme circumstances, kill women, and nobody knows why. I’m left thinking that if men developed problems with their periods, we would know.
