Raul Kohli: Raul Britannia - On The Mic

Raul Kohli: Raul Britannia ★★★★

This Review is from August 2024

Raul Kohli was born to a Hindu Indian father and a Sikh Singaporean mother. Raised in a Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, in the northeast of England, his best mate was Pakistani Muslim. Raul has since lived all over the UK and has developed a deep appreciation for our nation’s cultural diversity.

While his show was being performed in Edinburgh, there were race riots and looting in parts of England. The UK is far from perfect, Raul maintains as he addresses this thuggery, but we are not collectively broken. There is a lot of good in multiculturalism. He skewers right wing politicians and their friends in the media who declare that its failed.

Raul has a relatable, likeable, self-deprecating charm. He recounts a racist encounter with a bus driver at age of ten, which led him, as a child, to question his Indian identity. Raul’s journey to reclaim his heritage makes a beautiful story.

If all this sounds very worthy, well, that’s not quite right, as there’s jokes-a-plenty. The packed audience laughed their red, white and blue socks off for an hour.

A show about acceptance, belonging, laughter and dare I say, love.
