Stuart Laws Has to Be Joking? - On The Mic

Stuart Laws Has to Be Joking? ★★★★

This Review is from August 2024

Some folks have that extra ‘it’ – the intangible that separates the greats from the rest of us. They see the world a little differently, but can successfully communicate offbeat ideas through their chosen art. In Stuart Laws Has to Be Joking? the comedian reveals that he has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Through playful, intelligent humour, we learn what living with ASD can actually be like.

The comedian explores the challenges of social interactions, including small talk and dating. Siblings… pets… a wet floor sign incident. He speaks about honesty in relationships, sharing experiences of infidelity and the emotional challenges of being with someone who has cheated. There are humorous reflections on travel experiences and cultural differences, particularly regarding toilet habits.

Stuart Laws is a tremendous writer and performer, and this show can be enjoyed as a set of very funny personal anecdotes and great stories. But look closer and you’ll find a real insight in to how one neurodivergent mind works. Many people with ASD struggle to communicate. It can be hard to find enough common ground to be understood. The genius of Stuart Laws is that, through laughter, we get it.
