Susie McCabe: Merchant of Menace - On The Mic

Susie McCabe: Merchant of Menace ★★★★

This Review is from August 2024

I’ve been a fan of Susie McCabe’s since I saw her perform at Edinburgh’s New Town Bar over ten years ago – and she was very funny then. It says something rather wonderful about our society that everyday stories of lesbian relationships, once considered niche, are now heard out with the comedy clubs and gay bars and have become mainstream.

The observational Glaswegian comedian covers plenty of ground, exploring subjects like home improvements, menopause, and holistic therapy. She discusses the role of a Glaswegian education in shaping class-based beliefs among kids.

I enjoyed the tale of a day out with friends, whom she’s known since school. The Prosecco fuelled Bottomless Bruch routine should be turned into a sitcom. She shares a very funny story about a two-night stay with her wife at Edinburgh’s Balmoral Hotel. Posh rituals in a five-star establishment are contrasted with the budget hotel experience.

Over the years Susie has clocked up hours and hours of stage time, travelling miles around the world. She deserves every piece of success she’s getting, because for all the hard work, she’s really bloody funny.
